One thing weighing on my mind since I started thinking about what to do for the folks who are going to get down to carving spoons, bowls and all fantastic and useful things we can make was – not everybody who wants to join (this movement) lives close to nature, with trees around and quite connected to seasons, simply not everybody has the right space to get freely creative.
We benefit mostly, i believe, from the fact that greenwoodcarving puts us in the contact with nature. To get our blank we simply must make it for the wooded area or have a luck to find a broken branch in a parc. That connection itself has a great value nowadays. But where to work if it is cold or we do not have even a backyard?
Then, something very basic apart from the tools and a piece of wood is a CHOPPING BLOCK. That thing is rather indispensable. And once you have it you get many things in one – a base for splitting the wood and chopping/carving of course, vice, multifunctional support for various projects, but a stool or a small table too. You can, out of the green, carve in your kitchen or in front of the window, balcony, garage, community garden or in a quiet corner of the street.
And so, i got an idea. It is not selling and posting the block of wood to you through a mail service dear reader. That would be far from the sustainable habits, that would not bring you much of the skills, we want to grow, and obviously it would miss the point of being in contact with the wood, nature and your innerself through the process of work. I am opening a CHOPPING/CARVING BLOCK WORKSHOP on Saturday the 18th of May, before the Sunday Spooncarving Workshop that takes place the same weekend. It is a fine opportunity. Come over! When it comes to working with wood i do have some more useful hand tools. Participants to this workshop will therefore be able to take an advantage of that to create their own block to take it home. The nicest way possible – with your clean energy only.

We will use only handtools to cut the trunk, drill holes and make a nice set of legs. I am opened to discuss various designs beforehand. We will aim for medium sized, easy to transport block. You can inspire yourself in a few examples on the spot too;) It may surprise you. There is a whole world of chopping/carving blocks out there 🙂

This is first of the Green Greenwoodworking Workshops i would like to occasionally organise when I will come across some good idea that promotes this greenwoodworking craft rennaisance, time of learning to create things with simple tools in our hands, to feed our souls and share what we can do.

Une chose me trotte dans la tête depuis que je pense à quoi faire pour les personnes qui vont commencer à créer des cuillères, bols et autres choses fantastiques et utiles : il n’est pas donné à tout le monde (ici, aux personnes qui aimeraient rejoindre le mouvement) de vivre si proche de la nature, entourés d’arbres et connectés aux saisons. Il n’est pas si simple d’avoir l’endroit idéal pour développer sa créativité.
On s’enrichit principalement, je crois, du fait que la sculpture du bois vert nous met en contact direct avec la nature. En effet, pour obtenir notre morceau brut on doit forcément se diriger vers une zone boisée ou alors avoir la chance de trouver une branche cassée dans un parc. Cette connexion à la nature est d’une grande valeur à l’heure actuelle. Mais où travailler s’il fait froid ou s’il n’y a pas de cour intérieure ?
Donc quelque chose de très basique à part les outils et un morceau de bois frais est un BILLOT. Cette chose est carrément indispensable. Étant un support multifonctionnel pour divers projets, une fois que vous l’avez, vous obtenez plusieurs choses à la fois : une base pour fendre le bois, créer la forme brute de vos cuillères, spatules tasses ou autres bols mais également un tabouret ou une petite table. Vous pourrez dès lors, suivant votre humeur, sculpter dans la cuisine ou le garage, devant une fenêtre ou sur le balcon, dans le jardin communautaire ou un coin tranquille de la rue !
Et donc j’ai eu une idée. Ce n’est pas de vous vendre et de vous envoyer un bloc de bois via un service de livraison cher lecteur. Ce serait fort éloigné des habitudes éco responsables que nous aimons cultiver et cela ne vous apporterait pas de savoir-faire. En plus, cela passerait à côté du fait d’être en connexion avec le bois, la nature et votre fort intérieur, tout en travaillant. J’organiserai ainsi un ATELIER DE CRÉATION D’UN BILLOT le samedi 18 mai, avant l’atelier de création d’une cuillère qui se passe le dimanche du même weekend. Venez, c’est une chouette opportunité ! Et lorsqu’il s’agit de travail du bois, j’ai toute une collection d’outils manuels à découvrir. Les participants à cet atelier auront donc l’avantage de les utiliser afin de créer leur propre billot et de rentrer avec ce dernier à la maison. La plus belle façon de faire : uniquement grâce à votre pure force physique.
(Si vous habitez trop loin de nous mais vous connaissez un sculpteur de bois vert dans votre coin, contactez-le et voyez s’il est possible d’organiser un atelier similaire.)
Nous utiliserons uniquement des outils manuels pour couper le tronc, percer les trous et faire un chouette lot de pieds. Je suis ouvert à discuter au préalable de design. Le but sera de créer un billot de taille moyenne, facile à transporter. Vous pourrez vous inspirer des quelques exemples sur place. Ça pourrait vous surprendre. Il y a tout un monde de billot ici 😉
